Match Race Germany Names Porsche as New Partner
London, UK – 26 January, 2012: Match Race Germany, the opening event on the 2012 World Match Racing Tour, has announced world renowned car manufacturer Porsche as a new event partner. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Match Race Germany which will take place on Lake Constance, Langenargen from 23 to 28 May 2012.
Following a successful trial sponsorship by MHP, a subsidiary of Porsche, at Match Race Germany in 2011, Porsche AG will now become a sponsor and boat partner to this year’s event which attracts over 30,000 sailing fans. A marketing campaign, including on-event activation, will allow the brand to engage with current and prospective customers at the annual event.

RORC Caribbean 600: Race of Nations
With less than one month to go to the fourth edition of the RORC Caribbean 600, the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s 2012 programme kicks off with a sensational cast in Antigua.
The RORC Caribbean 600 is a truly international affair, with well over 500 hundred competitors from at least 24 different nations taking part. More than 30 impressive yachts are expected to take part in a high-speed, action-packed yacht race around 11 Caribbean islands. There can be few sporting events that can boast such a worldwide appeal with sailors taking part from all over the world including:
Antigua, Australia, Austria, Canada, Cayman Islands, Croatia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Puerto Rico, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, St. Lucia, Trinidad Tobago, Turkey and the United States of America.
This astounding diversity of nationalities is matched only by the astonishing array of yachts and personalities. The largest yacht competing this year is the magnificent Hetairos with a waterline length of 200′. Hetairos is the world’s largest carbon composite sailing yacht. The 29 crew on board is composed of many Volvo Ocean Race, America’s Cup and Jules Verne around
1900 Olympic Sailing Competition
Fast forward four years to 1900 and sailing’s 112 year Olympic history began on the River Seine. Meulan, 20km away from Paris, and Le Havre, located at the mouth of the Seine welcomed the sailors to the Games of the II Olympiad.
All competitors were required to participate in a Concourse d’Honneur on 20 May at Meuan but only seven finished inside the time limit. Two, Mamie and Carabinier were disqualified for “using other means of propulsion than sail.”
The image below (taken from the 1900 Olympic Report) shows the boats that finished the Concourse d’Honneur.
The classes were determined under the Thames Tonnage Rules with the 10-20 and Over 20 Ton classes competing on the coast. In fact the big boats just had one race to determine their medal while the smaller classes on the Seine at Meulan had two separate races with medal winners in each.
This is one reason for the inconsistent results because some sources have aggregated the two races in the modern style as an overall series score.
Keeping It In The Family
Count Hermann de Pourtales of Switzerland, winner in the 1-2 Ton class, was the oldest sailor at 53. Sailing alongside him was his wife, Helene de Pourtales who,
